This page features the latest news on our upcoming programs and events:

On Sunday, April 28, 2019, the New York Chapter of the Iranian American Bar Association (IABA-NY) will host its ninth annual gala event to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, with a gathering of attorneys, professionals, and prominent members of the Iranian American community. This year, the Nowruz Dinner will take place at the elegant and historic ballroom at the New York County Lawyers Association in downtown Manhattan. The event will feature authentic Persian cuisine, traditional Persian New Year decorations, and a keynote speech from Fatemeh Ziai, Chief of Staff of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Field Support at the United Nations. Ms. Ziai previously served as Chief of Staff to the UN Deputy Secretary-General, was a member of the UN team at the Bonn Peace Talks and helped to set up the UN mission that followed in Afghanistan, and was a legal advisor to the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
IABA-NY is extending businesses the opportunity to promote their services to our members, while showing their support for the Iranian American community, by becoming a sponsor of this year’s Nowruz Dinner.
Sponsors are prominently featured in our invitations and marketing materials for the event and are recognized at the event itself. Sponsors will have the opportunity to promote their companies to hundreds of attorneys and other members of the Iranian American community and to gain access to a unique network of attorneys and professionals, as well as support cross-cultural endeavors and understanding at a critical time for Iranian-American relations.
We have three levels of sponsorship:

Silver Sponsors (Contribution of $1,000) Receive:

• Inclusion in the invitations and marketing materials for the Nowruz Dinner;
• Recognition by the MC at the Nowruz Dinner; and
• Two complimentary tickets to attend the Nowruz Dinner

Gold Sponsors (Contribution of $2,500) Receive:

• All the benefits of a Silver Sponsor, plus:
• The opportunity to provide promotional materials and/or products that IABA-NY will distribute at the Nowruz Dinner; and

IABA New York Launches Pro-Bono Program

This year, the IABA-NY Chapter launched a new Pro Bono Program to connect its member attorneys to volunteer opportunities through which they can provide free legal assistance to Iranians and Iranian-Americans in need.

In the Program’s first case, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) referred an Iranian man who needed help with the asylum process and his interview with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service Asylum Office.

Volunteer attorneys from the IABA community provided guidance and assistance to the individual for his interview and application process. Parisa Karaahmet, a Partner at Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, LLP, kindly stepped up and became our first volunteer attorney.  IABA-NY Vice President Pejman Sharifi, a Partner at Winston & Strawn, LLP also provided assistance. Fortunately, the case was approved and Asylum status was granted a few weeks after the interview.  The individual is now afforded all the rights granted to an asylee in the United States, namely that he can now live and work in the United States permanently in conjunction with his status.

If you would like further information about the Pro Bono Program, please send us an e-mail to with “Pro Bono” in the subject line.

PLEASE NOTE:  If you are an Iranian or Iranian-American in need of free legal assistance, we are not equipped to meet with you in the first instance, but must refer you to a non-profit legal services organization in the Tri State area for screening based on need.  If your matter is referred to us, we will attempt to find a volunteer attorney among our membership.  Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee assistance.
